EMI Filters for Electronic Power Supply Applications


Electronic power supplies (SMPS - switched-mode power supply) are used to provide input power to a host of electronic devices such as LED lighting, computers, set top boxes, mobile phones, electric vehicles, motor drivers, DC relays and battery chargers. This happens by converting an input AC voltage into regulated DC voltage at high frequencies ranging from a few kHz to more than 1 MHz.


However, the EMI generated from switching of this electrical current can cause malfunction and damage to nearby equipment. EMI Filters are mandatorily used in power supplies to prevent this.

EMC filters fitted in power supplies are connected to the primary side of an electronic device. Therefore, the highest adherence to safety standards is required to protect against accidental electric shock, smoking or fire.

Many countries in the world have their own safety standards for EMI filters. So they should be selected based on what is approved by the safety standards of the countries to which the device will be exported.
