The Telecommunication industry is vastly expanding with new devices and equipment being deployed for both wired and wireless communication solutions. This makes managing the EMI immunity a great challenge. Signal transmitters and mobile towers also emit strong signals which cause EMI emissions. There is high impact of emissions on the human population and plant/animal life living in close proximity to telecom installations.

EMI/EMC effects concerning the telecom industry cover the following applications:

Central office equipment like signalling gateways, telephone exchanges, data centres

Care should be taken to prevent EMI from one component affecting each other. Typically, power supplies, air conditioners are some of the equipment that are collocated along with the telecom equipment in the central office.

Distributed equipment like BTS

They are placed in cell towers close to huge population centres. In crowded metropolitan cities, mobile towers are erected on top of residential apartment buildings that host up to a dozen BTS boxes from multiple service providers. Each of these BTS boxes have to be protected from EMI, both from other BTS and from natural sources like lightning.

Home communication equipment like wire-line and wireless routers

They have to be protected from EMI emanating from increasing number of electrical and electronic devices like mobile phones, microwave oven, induction stoves, and similar devices that are in close proximity with the telecom devices.
