Defence

Overview

EMI/EMC till the 1970s, was a challenge faced only in defence applications as they operated exclusively in the RF spectrum (with exception of Radio and Television). But over the years, various kinds of electronic equipment have emerged both in the military and commercial space. This has led to greater susceptibility to EMI/EMC in defence applications.

Military standards of EMI/EMC emission and immunity are much higher when compared to commercial applications because there is no room for error or failure. Harsh weather conditions (lightning, solar flares, floods, earth-quakes) and man-made threats (nuclear explosions, war) on military installations lead to very strict performance and reliability requirements. Testing the equipment on site is also critical to military usage.

Nowadays, even some industrial applications have been adopting stringent military standards of EMI/EMC compliance for safeguarding their equipment.

Commercial-military equipment integration provides opportunities for faster and lower costs in the development of military equipment. Commercial off-the shelf (COTS) use also provides access to a much larger industrial base.

Military applications affected by EMI/EMC

  • Military Radio Communication (RF radio transmitters and receivers)
  • Radar Systems (Equipment susceptibility due to close proximity to strong RF fields generated by radar transmitters)
  • Radiated susceptibility from commercial equipment nearby
  • Satellite Systems (Communication and Positioning)
  • Remote explosive devices
  • Cognitive radio networks
  • Aircrafts, Ships and Submarines

Both RF emissions and susceptibility testing must be conducted in a strictly controlled environment such as an anechoic chamber, reverberation chamber, or open-air test site (OATS). This level of control is necessary to ensure the safety of test personnel from inadvertent exposure to the RF energy and also, to ensure that test results are not contaminated by incidental RF energy in the ambient environment.

EMIS Offers

  • 25%

25% of EMIS business is related to the defence sector. EMIS holds a pre-eminent position in providing comprehensive EMI/EMC solutions to military applications.

  • R&D Lab

EMIS has a state-of-the-art R&D Lab recognised by DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India).

  • Test Facility

Is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories in accordance with the standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

  • On Site Testing

We also support on-site testing in compliance with international standards.

EMIS product portfolio for defence applications

We have a wide range of input filters to reduce conducted and radiated EMI. Our product range also meets requirements concerning EMI susceptibility which support the entire frequency spectrum. We deliver associated products for adequate grounding, shielding and cabling to manage radiated emissions. Our facility filters comply with the highest international standards of conducted and radiated emission tests.

Point of Entry (POE) solutions for HEMP Protection

EMIS has a strong presence in solutions for HEMP (High altitude Electromagnetic Pulse). EMP causes malfunction of electronic systems by overloading the circuits, which can be extremely detrimental to military installations. The level of destruction depends on the magnitude and location of the strike.

  • Solutions for all 3 types of EM Pulses (E1: 5kA 20/550ns pulse, E2: 250A 1.5µs/4000ms pulse, E3: 1000A 0.2/20s pulse)

EMIS Filters and components range

Depending on the installation site and application, several components are available for EMI protection.

  • Single Phase Filters and 3 Phase (COTS) Filters for avionics, shipboard electronics
  • Feed-through components – Capacitors and filters to remove RF noise
  • EMI Filters for Lightning Protection (10/350µs)
  • Choke Coils, Grounding and Shielding material suitable for extreme weather conditions
  • Cabling and Routing solutions
